Projects & Programs

KAK has over fifteen years of experience in community sports and mobility of human resources and knowledge. KAK started implementing an exchange program for university students with the aim of enhancing a network of Kenyan CSOs in 2006, with a main focus on training trainers (ToT).

Each year since 2009, KAK organizes coaching camps and clinics bringing together local and
international/professional experts, from sports and educational sectors.

2024 - Present

WASICHANA TWENDE

WASICHANA TWENDE empowers girls in Kisumu county through football, promoting gender equality, self-confidence, and life skills while fostering gender awareness in families, schools, and communities.

The program supports training at Kisumu WeFootball Academy, establishes sports clubs in 10 schools, conducts life skills education, and runs community leagues. conducting lifeskills education, home visits and running community league. Targeting approximately 2000 beneficiaries.

SLUMSPORTS PROGRAM

SLUMS SPORTS uses sports like basketball, football, and rugby to empower youth in disadvantaged communities, providing life skills, health education, and opportunities for education scholarships.

Benefiting over 2,000 children annually, the program focuses on talent development, gender balance, and community advocacy, with support from Tavola, Chiesa Valdese, and TAG International.

2012 - Present

SLUMSDUNK BASKETBALL

The SlumsDunk Kenya Basketball Project started in 2012, focusing on training marginalized coaches and players. It expanded to include two academies in Kenya and inspired global initiatives.

The project trains local coaches and has two academies: Mathare Academy in Nairobi with 150 beneficiaries and Kisumu Academy with 100 beneficiaries.

2022 - Present

GRASSROOTS RUGBY

Beginning October 2022, KAK started to promote rugby activities in Kenya.

It’s intended to take a similar pathway to the above sister projects and is being implemented concurrently in the two respective counties of Nairobi and Kisumu.

2006 – Present

WHYNOT ACADEMY

The WhyNot Association, a long-time KAK partner in Mathare slums, provides a crucial community center.

We face challenges like funding shortages and recent flood damage.

2010 - Present

BIANCO NERO:

The Black-White program, a social tourism initiative by Karibu Afrika Kenya, promoted responsible travel in Kenya.

It fostered cultural exchange between visitors and local communities while generating income for the organization and its partners.

Previous Projects

2014 - 2017

SLUMS DUNK - HOOPS FOR KIDS

Led by a co-implementing partner, world friends onlus the project aimed to promote life-skills among the youth through sport in Mathare and Manyatta slums in Nairobi and Kisumu respectively.

An attempt was made to extend similar activities to three rural villages (Pundo, Kabete, and Kajulu) in Kisumu County. Constructions of Pundo and Kabete basketball courts.

2012 - 2013

WEAVING THE PARITY “TESSERE LA PERITA”

The project aimed to empower women by promoting economic independence through income-generating activities.

This included tailoring training for over 20 women, providing equipment, and supporting the establishment of businesses for four groups of women residing in Nairobi’s slums.

CULTIVATE THE FUTURE FOOD SECURITY

The project aimed to ensure food security for Jukumu Letu Kindergarten in Ngong, Mathare slum. This involved establishing an organic school garden, including a greenhouse with drip irrigation.

The project also included training on organic farming and marketing to ensure long-term sustainability. It was funded by Fondazine Raphael, Karibu Afrika Onlus, and Jukumu Letu.

2012 - 2013

JUKUMU LETU

This project focused on improving food security for Jukumu Letu Kindergarten in Ngong. It involved establishing organic farming and beekeeping activities, including training, greenhouse installation, and equipment procurement.

Awareness campaigns were conducted in Kenya and Italy. Around 20 small-scale farmers and environmentalists participated in training courses. The project received funding from Fondazione Raphael, Karibu Afrika Onlus, Jukumu Letu, and other sources.

2012 - 2014

INSIDE MATHARE

The project was intended to inspire quality education in the Mathare slums through the development and improvement of education facilities and establishment of a self-sustainable agricultural space for the pupils and teachers of the WhyNot Junior Academy and the community
of Mabatini.

KUNACTION (TRAINING FOR EMPOWERMENT)

The project aimed to enhance education quality in Mathare slums by improving school facilities and creating a self-sustaining agricultural space for Whynot Junior Academy students and the Mabatini community.

2010 - 2011

CINEMARENA

KAK partnered in an advocacy campaign in the formerly Nyanza province on Malaria prevention and child rights using sports and video as communication tools, funded an led by the Kenyan-Italian
Embassy.

Targeting the rundown areas of towns and rural communities. KAK used this opportunity
as well to gather possibilities for expansion of its operations beyond Nairobi.

2009 – 2012

KUNASHULE

The project focused on building a training center in Kibera for complementary school teachers and children. Managed by Hope International School, a refugee-led institution.

The center offered courses in pedagogy, languages, sports management, computer skills, and video reporting.

To enhance accessibility, the project included a school bus to transport students and facilitate travel for partner institutions participating in the “Kunaction Project” training and exchange programs.

2010

ALTRI MONDIALI

KAK organized and led a sports and development advocacy campaign tour across 7 African countries, from Kenya up to South Africa, during the Football World Cup, comprising of local Kenyan and European Italian team advocating on the impact and importance of sports as a tool for socio-economic development.

In collaboration with CoLomba: Cooperazione Lombardia, visiting
communities through various organizations local and local south of Sahara (Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Swaziland and South Africa). Funded by Guna Spa, Coop. Lombardia,
Decathlon.
